Saturn and Pluto- World Transformation, and Astrology Forecast January 31-February 6

by Leo Knighton Tallarico

The most dominant astrological aspect in our collective psyches now is Saturn square Pluto, whose second pass is happening Sunday the 31st of January.   The first pass was on November 15, 2009, and the last pass will be in August 2010.  Therefore from October 2009 through September 2010 this aspect will be asserting its influence in our lives.  Though all aspects and all planets are meaningful and have a “needed” role or function to serve in our lives, these two do not usually feel very good.

If you have been feeling heavy, serious, darker energies in your life lately, you may be experiencing this Saturn/Pluto aspect now.   Sometimes it feels like impending doom is upon upon you.

Saturn is the Teacher, and not the soft and fuzzy kind.   It is the stern taskmaster who teaches us our toughest lessons.   Saturn is Karma and the law of “as you sow, so shall you reap”, or “what goes around, comes around”.   There is no escaping some limits defined by Saturn, like death.   Saturn is boundaries and limits, rules and regulations.  It helps us to concentrate on achieving and accomplishing through planning and organization, through discipline and hard work.   Saturn is our gravitational anchor to this earthly world.    It is the forms we build that we try to conserve and preserve as long as we can.   It is the “system” we have built through our government, military, and economic institutions.  It is the traditions and security forms you have built in your own life.

Pluto is the guardian of the underworld, the shadow world that holds all our deeper emotions and thoughts that are connected to our more primal instincts.  These primal instincts “know” what has gone beyond the laws of nature and our deeper Soul, what has become artificial or corrupt or stagnant or “soul dead”.    Pluto’s primal power sometimes ruthlessly destroys that which has outlived its time or has become an empty form devoid of spirit or soul.   After Pluto has taken us to the pit of our psyche, to the core of the issue, it then releases that which is ready to be shed.  Then from the ashes of destruction, a phoenix of new life is born.  Old forms are destroyed and new seeds are birthed.

When Saturn and Pluto make “hard” aspect to one another, through conjunction, opposition or square, powerful events explode into our collective lives.  In 1914, the year of a Saturn/Pluto conjunction, World War I broke out.   In 1939, at a Saturn/Pluto square, World War II broke out.   In 2001, in August, Saturn was in opposition to Pluto.  One month later the 9-11 attacks were perpetrated against the USA.

Keep in mind that such dramatically destructive events do not occur at every such Saturn/Pluto aspect.  But you certainly get the flavor of Saturn and Pluto together by these examples.  Pluto is the primal energy that seeks to destroy old Saturnian forms, structures, and institutions.    There is a rebirth that occurs through the ashes of destruction.    The current world structure, run by a massive Military/Economic structure, is in the process of restructuring. The current economic challenges we face; the shifting of world power to the east and China and India; the powder keg of “freedom fighters”/”terrorists” ; all show us the restructuring of our world system.

There are other cultural structures or paradigms that need to be transformed also.  As of this writing the Super Bowl will air an ad that is pro-life against pro-choice, but will not allow an ad that promotes a gay dating site.    The power of Pluto seeks to destroy old Saturn forms that do not serve greater Life anymore.  The Saturn structures fight for the old form to survive.   Do not worry, it is an issue of natural process toward furthering human evolution.   The Aquarian Age welcomes all forms of love, and old “traditional” ways that no longer serve greater love will die.

In your personal life, look at the security forms you have built.     If these forms support your soul’s journey they are fine.  But if you have lost your passion and sense of purpose for your life, then perhaps it time to transform your life.  Maybe you need new work, new relationships, a new home?  Perhaps old patterns of behavior no longer serve your deeper Self.

If you are running your life in any way that represses your authentic self, your passion and joy, then perhaps you are ready for change.    If you live your life to please someone else or just because you were programmed to live it that way, perhaps you are ready for change.

Saturn square Pluto is not the only transformational aspect in 2010. Saturn opposite Uranus, Jupiter conjunct Uranus, and the first waves of Uranus square Pluto occur this year.  Also there will be a powerful Lunar Eclipse Full Moon Grand Cross in late June.

We will talk  about all of these aspects more in the spring of 2010 when they emerge into our world psyche.

This week be careful not to be enveloped by your own or other people’s heavy and negative energies.  The purpose of Saturn/Pluto is help us to release the past and that which has no life in it anymore for us.    Grieve, yell, get angry, but don’t let your self fall into a pit of despair, depression, or misery.

Modern groundhog day, which is  Christian Candlemas happens on February 2, this Tuesday.  It is approximately the mid point of winter solstice and spring equinox.

It is time to feel the coming of spring right around the corner.

Imbolc is celebrated also at this time.    It is a Celtic holiday celebrated by neo Pagans.  It is traditionally a time of weather prognostication, and the old tradition of watching to see if serpents or badgers came from their winter dens is perhaps a precursor to Groundhogs Day. A Scottish Gaelic proverb about the day is:

Thig an nathair as an toll Là donn Brìde, Ged robh trì troighean dhen t-sneachd Air leac an làir. “The serpent will come from the hole On the brown Day of Bride, Though there should be three feet of snow On the flat surface of the ground.”

Fire and purification are an important aspect of this festival. Brigid (also known as Brighid, Bríde, Brigit, Brìd) is the Gaelic goddess of poetry, healing and smithcraft. As both goddess and saint she is also associated with holy wells, sacred flames, and healing. The lighting of candles and fires represents the return of warmth and the increasing power of the Sun over the coming months.

Baseball spring training begins around this also.

Allow your self this week to feel the glow of the coming spring even it feels cold as ice this week.

See you next week.
